Red Triangle Lost

My skyscraper is call Red Triangle Lost. It its unique because of its shape. My skyscraper would be used for methods like shopping, restaurants, office space, day care centers, movie theathers, ect. Red Triangle Lost would be located in Washington Park, in Yonkers, N.Y. It would be a good thing for the community and the economy.

Water Colors

On our trip across the Brooklyn Bridge to the Brooklyn Promenade i was very scare because I am afraid of heights and walking that bridge was not cool. Although I did injoyed the view. I had alot of fun in the park. Playing with the water colors and drawing our painting was very fun. I like how everyone behaved well, maybe it was because most of the annoying freshmens stood behind. Overall i had a good time it was by far one of my most favorite trips it was very worth while.

Our goal using Brice was to design a skycraper that was unique. I had never worked with Brice before, so it was a bit of a challenge, but I manage and I have my skescraper. My skyscraper is a mixture of random shapes put together to build one unique design. I had fun building my skyscraper and I injoy myself.

bryce 5.5 skyscraper

Our goal was to design a skyscraper usinig bryce 5.5. I had no idea what kind of building I wanted to create so I decided to use any random shapes. Shaping a skyscraper wasn't easy for me for the strength wasn't good enough to hold the roof to my building. I used many colors for I wanted each shape to have its individual color. I added trees to give my building a natural look yet still be a professional. I had fun playing around trying to make something out of shapes.

judy's skysraper

Our project was to create a tall skyscraper out of cardboard. I decided to make a animal shelter skyscraper. One of the buildings is shaped of a dog bone and the second building is tall and church style. My main focus would the animal shelter for their thousands of in need for medical help and shelter. My territory is focused on animals so it holds pools, playgrounds, water fountains etc. i wanted to make this land as confttirble it can be for the animals so i even added trees and grass. I was deeply infatuated by this building it was my way of expressing about animals. I am proud of my work and and the effort i had set to this project.

Gehry’s father, Irving Goldberg was born to Polish immigrants in Brooklyn New York. It was a hard life for Gehry at the age 11 when his father died. As he grew older he fought in the streets for money. He later moved to Canada, going from one job to another. After graduating in his profession he slowly worked his way up to success. He sent his sketches to a cross-cultural magazine where they were published. He went to the army with the title of Private First Class. His skills were recognized and they captured many eyes, for it was amazing that such a young architect could create such amazing furniture designs. After people acknowledged his furniture he received more job offers and was commissioned to build many houses, museums, institutes, restaurants, and office buildings. His architectural philosophy was “I approach each building as a sculptural object, a spatial container, a space with light and air, a response to context and appropriateness of feeling and spirit”. Today he is famous for the buildings he has constructed, such as Ontario, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Gehry Residence, Weisman Art Museum, and Dancing house.

Another design would be his personal residence, The Gehry Residence. It was like any other residence at the start until gehry decided to get creative with his home. Chain link fence, corrugated steel, metal, plywood, wood and wood framing was built around the existing house. He chose to wrap the outside of the house with a new exterior while still leaving the old exterior visible. Gehry’s property became very unique. Neighbors were not happy though with Gehry’s unusual building. Some even try to defecate his property as their way of protesting. Personally I feel his architectural style was very interesting for it was very haphazard in design. I am looking forward to see more of his new designs and personally get to meet him.

One of Gehry’s many designs was The Walt Disney Concert Hall at Los Angeles, California. It is the Fourth Hall of the Los Angeles Music Center. This project was launched in 1987 when Lillian Disney had donated $50 million in the name of her husband Walt Disney. The building was made from cladding steel and the interior was constructed with metal skin. Completed in 2003. It had many problems including economic problems. Residents of the neighboring building suffered significant glare caused by the sunlight that was reflected and concentrated in a manner similar to a parabolic mirror. The concentrated light made some of the rooms very hot, almost up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The Only solution was to sand the cladding steel in order to reduce the glare. After these adjustments the Walt Disney Hall became a successful design.

Frank Gehry

Frank Gehry was born on February 28, 1929 and raised into a Jewish Family in Toronto, Ontario. Married and divorced to two wives named Anita Snyder and Berta, he had two daughters and two sons. He was known to be a creative child at a young age, encouraged by his grandmother Caplan, with whom he would build little cities out of scraps of wood. Influenced by his grandmother he eventually realized where his passion lied. He studied at Los Angeles City College and eventually graduated from University of South California’s school of Architecture. After graduation he spent time away from the field of architecture and had numerous other jobs, including service in the U.S Army. He studied city planning at Harvard Graduate School of Design for a year, leaving before completing the program

Louis Khan architectural work is noticeable because of its forms and compositions. All of Louis Khan works demonstrate his way of thinking and his passion for various things. The Salk Institute is one of his most impressive architectural designs. Although it is not the most eyes catching when it comes to style or beauty, it is a remarkable piece of art because of its uniqueness. The way it looks like just boxes stacked upon each other and the fact that it’s made of wood and stone gives off its weird aspect.
It catches light and water in a significant way that no other architect has yet managed to do.
Another magnificent architectural design by Louis Khan is the Yale University Art Gallery in New haven, Connecticut. That was Louis Khan first significant commission and one of his first masterpieces. The Art Gallery has technical innovations like a floor slab system. It is also a very remarkable piece of architecture that shows us who Louis Khan was as an architect.

[part 3]

In 1932 Khan worked with Dominique Berninger and together they formed the Architectural Research Group. In 1959 Khan designed the First Unitarian Church in Rochester New York. Then in 1969 there was an addition to the building also constructed by Louis Khan. Mr. Khan also builds the Norman Fisher House, and the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh. This building is one of the largest legislative complexes in the world. It serves as a house for all parliamentary activities of Bangladesh.
One of Louis greatest work was the Yale Center for British Art; the museum is located in New Haven, Connecticut at Yale University. The museum concentrates on the Elizabethan period and onward.
Louis loved light. All of his buildings are high in natural light. All of his architectural styles were constructed to have plenty of natural light. He also constructed buildings that he knew would be preserve in time, buildings that would be around even when he would be gone. That’s why he used materials like, stone and concrete. Khan never really settled down and worked in one place for one particular person. He also had troubled finding people to commission him because he did not desire to follow orders. He worked as he wanted, he constructed buildings the way he desire, and he did not like to be told how to work. One building that I think is typical of Kahn’s style is the Salk Institute. The entire building looks like boxes stacked up on top of each other. It’s made of stone with some wood. What’s very special about this building is that all the labs over look the Pacific Ocean. Something Khan also likes to do is instead of putting fountains he rather constructs in places that over look bodies of water.

[part 2]

Louis Khan went to the University of Pennsylvania were he was trained in Beaux-Arts tradition. Kahn completed his master’s degree in 1924. After obtaining his master’s degree he traveled through Europe to see the architecture he had studied. He also traveled through Northern Europe and Italy.
One of Louis early works was the Trenton Bath House, which he builds in 1954. Which was neither in Trenton, New Jersey nor a bath house. The bath house open in 1955 it was the entrance and the changing area for patrons of an outdoor swimming pool. Then in 1959 Kahn build the Salk Institute one of his greatest architectural achievements ever. The Salk Institute is located in La Jolla, California and Jonas Salk founded it. It’s a beautiful work of architecture that captures sunlight in a whole new perspective.

The Life of Louis Isadore Khan [part 1]

Louis Isadore Kahn was born on February 20, 1901 or 1902 in Parnu, Eston. His parents were Bertha Mendelson and Leid Schmuilowsky. His original name was Leiser-Itze Schmuilowsky, which was changed by his father in 1912. His family was Jewish and they moved to the United States in 1905. He was raised in Philadelphia and became a naturalized citizen on May 15, 1914.
The Oscar nominated documentary My Architect tells us a lot about his early life. When Louis was three years old he was amazed by the flames from the coal being burned and this lead him to place some coals in his apron, some parts of his body caught on fire because of this incident, and ever since that he had a scars on his face and hands. When Louis was younger he was very anti-social because the other children would make fun of him and call him names like “scar face”. So he spent most of his time alone. Louis’s family was very poor, but he was very talented in music and art and because of his talent he was able to obtain money to help his family out. He would burn sticks in the back of his house in order to draw because his family was too poor to afford pencils. Louis also played the piano for silent movies and made money off of that as well. Khan first study architecture at Central High School in Philadelphia. In high school he was a classmate of Norman N. Rice, who was also a famous architect and a life long friend of Louis. When Louis went to high school he had a teacher whom he admired very much, that teacher put him in an architecture class and ever since that, he realized he wanted to pursue a career in architecture. After he graduated high school Khan worked for office of City Architect as a senior draftsman.

The AT&T Building

The AT&T building now known as the SONY building was build in 1984 by Philip Johnson and John Burgee. The building is located on 55st. and Madison avenue. The building is six hundred and sixty feet tall and it has thirty seven stories. The building is made out of steel and glass, the features are granite-clad, and goldleaf. It has a monumental base and a distinctive broken pediment at the top. The color of the exterior walls are beige and the windows look black. This building is very beautiful and it's architectural design is very unique. At first glance of the building we thought that although it's unique in its own way, it is also kind of plain.

Architect

Who is an architect?
An architect is an individual that not only draws what he or she invisions but turns it into a "3d" design. An architect lives to make buildings or designs that will be mind blowing, unique, safe, but most important likeable to the public.

What kind of people get to build skyscrapers?
The kind of people that get to build skyscrapers are the ones who are open to ideas. People who get to build skescrapers have to be willing to sometimes push their visions to the side, because what matters most in that sort of industry is pleasing the crowd all while building something incredible.

What personalities/ skills do they share?
Architects need skills in math because they need to know how to measure and add those measurements as well. They need skills in english because they need to be able to explain there ideas in full sentences so other people can envison it. They also need skills in art, because they need to draw what they eventually want to build.

LOIS KHAN

Lois Khan born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1906. He had two daughters and one son, each from three different women. His son Nathaniel Khan is in search for the reason of his father’s death. Many questions are present in his head such as how he died. Who was the last person he was with? And more. He was famous for the different creations of buildings he had done. As a child he won prizes for the drawings he had created. He and his family were very poor. He was not a sociable person at a young age for they called him scar face. As he traveled he realized what he wanted to do with his life. He was a philosophical man. The mother of one of his daughters disliked that and decided to leave him. She had come to the realization that he was not going to leave his wife and marry her. In 1978 he received one of his biggest commissions—designing the New York City AT&T Building (1978-1984). It was hard for him to find people to hire him because he had his own style. He did not want others to tell him how to do his job. Many people disliked his work while others loved it. Some people considered him an "amazing man". Lois also build a boat, avery unique boat. Lois work were all extradionary because they are all different, they had different styles, he didnt really follow other people's structures. When he died, he died in Penn Station. He was found faced up in the station's bathroom. The police were unable to find his home because he had crossed out his address on his passport. He remained unclaimed after his death for three days. While others hated him, others adored him. No matter what the emotion one had towards Lois Khan, he was surely a man of extradionary ideas and had an interesting legacy and history.

the chrysler building

The Chrysler building was designed by an architect named William Van Alen. It was constructed on September 19, 1928. During this time, the passion in constructing the tallest building became an intensive competition. 77 floors were built with 32 elevators. Krupp KA2 Enduro steel and granite steel was used in order to construct the ideal building.
The Chrysler building is an example of art deco architecture. It is now 125ft. in height and 58.4 meters. Pamela and I both were amazed as we saw the design of the building's unique style. But we also wondered if we were able to throw a penny from the roof would it be able to kill a human life? Now that is a very interesting question. The Chrysler building happens to be the second tallest building today in New York.

ROXY PAINE SCULPTURES

Roxy Paine was born in 1966 in New York City. She went to the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico and the Pratt Institute in New York City. She lives in Brooklyn. Her work has been internationally known since 1990. Her work in Madison Square Park, New York consists of 3 very unique silver trees. The three sculptures stand out very much in a park surrounded by green trees, not only because of the color of them but because of their design. The three trees sculptures rage in size from 12 to 55 feet. They are made from about 700 metal pipes and rod elements in 30 different diameters. These three trees are beautiful and worth seeing because of many different aspects about them. I especially like how they stand out and how the light shines through the leaves of the sorrounding tress. I find this artist's style and design very very beautiful and interesting and would not mind seeing more of her work.

Metropolitan Life Insurace Company Towers

The Metropolitan LIfe Insurance Company Tower was built in 1909 by Napoleon Lebrun and Son's Design. The building or tower is 700 feet tall 213 meters. It has a 50 floor count and it was made of marble and limestone. The color is white and beige, except for the top piece that looks like a crown, which is gold. At first sight of this building, I found it admirable because of its beautiful features, especially the golden part. If I could change something about it, it would be to make the entire building gold. It is a very beautiful building that is now considered a landmark ever since Febuary 6, 1978. Another unique feature about this building is the 4 huge clocks on each side of the building that just tops off its unique style and design. For a short period of time it used to be the tallest building until it was surpassed by the Woolworth Building. In 2002 a new computerized multi-colored nighttime lighting system, kind of like the Empire state Building, was added to it, making it even more beautiful and unique than it already was.

The Flat Iron Building

The Flat Iron Building also known as the Fuller Building was built in 1902 by Daniel Burnhan and John Wellborn Root. The building is 285 ft. 87 meters. It has 22 floors and it's in a Beaux-Arts Style. It was made of a steel skeleton. The color of it is beige sort of tan and the scaffolding protecting it's new construction is orange. It's very unique because from a certain angle it looks flat but from the sky it looks like a triangle because it is triangular shape. I really like this building because of it's unique style and because it is the only flat building ever constructed. I dont think that I would change anything in this building because everything about it makes it beautiful, especially the triangular shape and the way the windows are. I would make a couple more of those though.

about us...

We are freaking kool. We Pamela and Judith freaking rock. We go to New Design High School. We have been attending New Design school since 9th and 10th grade. We are both in summer school because we are mising gym hours. Judith is missing 10 and Pamela is missing 15. We feel that we should only be here for two days considering our low amount of hours and also takeing in consideration that in two days we would have accumulated sixteen hours, which is more than both of us need to graduate high school. But since is not in our power to do this we have no choice but to suck it up and be here for two weeks of pure torture. We are crosing our fingers and watching as the hand on the clock moves slower and slower by ther second, as Judith plans on how to gain world domination and Pamela day dreams on what she could and should be doing rather than typeing up her complains. Which they are both possitive no one gives a rats a*s about!
once again we rock. As these fresh mens and juniors are wack.

the challenges creating a skyscraper

Skyscrapers have become a challange through out centuries between architects. It has become their passion to create a safe, unique, and tallest skyscraper ever. Passion spread through nations creating the tallest skyscraper such as the Eiffel Tower in Europe. Styles also was important for it define the creativity of each individual skyscraper such as the internatinal style and glass design Architects inspired by the passion of creating a skyscraper or even a bird cage. Each skyscraper has a different meaning and unique which makes them famous in different ways.
